The 75-year-old Omani man diagnosed with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (Mers) continues to recover and if he tests negative over the next four days he would be out of danger, Public Health Minister Rajata Rajatanavin said on Tuesday.

The man arrived in Bangkok on June 15 for treatment for heart disease, but was found to be infected with the Mers-coronavirus. He was admitted to the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute in Nonthaburi province and is being kept in isolation. Three relatives who travelled with him are also in quarantine.

The health minister said the Mers situation in Thailand was under control and improving. The number of people being monitored after coming into contact with the Omani man was falling and some of them could return home.

Dr Rajata said Thailand had effective disease control measures in place, including efficient checks on visitors from Middle East countries and South Korea, the two risk areas, so authorities had not placed restrictions on travel and tourism was unaffected.
