Land Transport Department officials and soldiers on Monday will begin morning and evening rush-hour inspections of passenger vans around Victory Monument in order to improve safety and service.

Jirut Wisanjit, deputy director-general of the department, told Daily News Online that the inspections would take place twice daily, from 6-8am and 4-6pm, the peak times for commuters. Soldiers from the Second Cavalry Squadron of the King's Guards will help with the checks, he added.

The stepped-up checks follow an inspection on Wednesday, when department officials said they found 42 public van drivers in breach of safety and service regulations.

Of the total, 13 operators had installed components without permission, 12 had not paid their annual vehicle tax, and seven drivers did not carry driving licences. As well, six had installed advertising materials without permission, three vans did not match their vehicle registration documents, and one unlicensed van was being used to provide service.

Mr Jirut said all of the violators were fined and their records would be kept on file for authorities to follow up.

All passenger van drivers, he said, must strictly follow the rules as well as provide safe and fair services, including not carrying more passengers than the legal limit.

Any drivers repeating their offences could have their driving licences suspended or revoked, Mr Jirut warned.
