Prajin delays taxi fare price hike

Transport Minister Prajin Juntong has delayed the planned second-phase taxi fare hike of 5% due to the country's economic downturn.

The ministry allowed an initial rise of 8% on Dec 13 last year. An increase of 5% in July was also flagged at that time. ACM Prajin said he is aware of the commitment to drivers of a second-phase increase but the ministry has to delay it because of the sluggish economy, which has been affected by the prolonged drought.

"The government wants all state agencies to first pay heed to people's living costs," he said.

In another development, ACM Prajin said his ministry plans to ask cabinet next week to extend the free bus and train services for 3-6 months after they expire on July 31.
