The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration reiterated on Monday that sufficient supplies of water remain for farming and tap use thanks to hedging, several supply sources and rainfall.

Water levels in major canals were adequate for agriculture and raw water remained available for tap service, city clerk Sanya Chenimit said, marking the third time in a week authorities have tried to reassure the public over the adequacy of water supplies.

There is enough water for farming in Khlong Sam Wa, Khlong Prawet Burirom and Khlong Saen Saep canals and more water had been pumped into paddy fields and ponds to support most farmland on the eastern side of the capital, he said.

Local farms also have benefited from sporadic rain in the Nong Chok and Lat Krabang districts of eastern Bangkok.

Regarding tap water production, Mr Sanya said Bangkok sourced raw water from Pathum Thani province and the Khlong Maha Sawat canal on the western side of the capital. Water supplies remained sufficient in Khlong Maha Sawat, he said.

"Regarding water shortages in Bangkok, the situation last year was worse than this year. Back then, there was little water in major canals for farming," the city clerk said.

He advised people in the capital not to panic about water supplies but said locals should still try to conserve.

Meanwhile, Suwit Rasmipaet, chief of Nong Chok, said dry canals in the district caused some cracks and subsidence on Suwinthawong 42 Road. River bank collapses also were possible on roads along the Krathum Lom, Jiaradab, Sib Song, Sib Sam, Ban Chado and Sanam Klang Lam canals, he said.

On Monday, the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority announced weak tap water from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning in some areas due to maintenance.
