PATHUM THANI — A woman was struck and killed Wednesday by two vehicles just after signing a petition requesting a pedestrian bridge be built across the same busy road.

Lanchakorn Chanklom, 54, was in a zebra crossing on Rangsit-Pathum Thani Road in Muang district when she was grazed by a taxi then struck full-on by a motorcycle driven at high speed by a 19-year-old college student, said Somjit Taethaisong, a member of the Bang Poon sub-district municipality council, who witnessed the incident.

Paramedics tried to save Lanchakorn's life at the scene, but failed. Police said the woman's head struck the ground hard and bled profusely. The taxi driver fled while the motorcyclist sustained a head injury and was sent to Pathum Thani Hospital.

Mrs Somjit said she and leaders of Sukkhi 2 community where Lanchakorn lived set up a desk at the mouth of Soi Sukkhi 2 to gather signatures for a plea asking government agencies to quickly build a pedestrian bridge over Rangsit-Pathum Thani Road, as cars had hit people several times.

She said Lanchakorn signed up the petition shortly before walking to her death.

Mrs Somjit said another person died last week in another accident at a spot nearby.

Lanchakorn's husband, Sinchai, said his wife was an employee at Thai Airways International and she was on her way to work when the accident occurred.

He urged authorities to build the pedestrian bridge for residents as soon as possible before more people are hurt or killed.

Police are trying to locate the taxi driver and will question the motorcyclist before deciding whether to press charges.
