Muslims mark end of Ramadan Friday

The Office of the Chularatchamontri on Thursday officially declared Friday as the Eid al-Fitr celebration marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

The announcement was made on the office’s website after the new moon had been sighted after sunset on Thursday.

All inter-provincial trains from Bangkok bound for predominantly Muslim provinces in the South and local trains in the region are filled with Thai Muslims returning to their families throughout Thursday.

A large number of Thai Muslims working in neigbouring Malaysia were seen flocking to the Malaysian side of the border checkpoint at Sungai Kolok to go through immigration in the morning.

Authorities have beefed up security at train stations from Hat Yai district of Songkhla to Narathiwat's Sungai Kolok district after the region was hit by eight separate bomb attacks which killed six persons last week.

According to Islamic teachings, only two Muslim feasts are permitted. They are Eid al-Adha which marks the end of the pilgrimage and Eid al-Fitr, or Hari Raya, which marks the end of Ramadan.

The three-day Eid al-Fitr festival is marked by family meetings, the slaughter of animals, and donations to charities and the poor.
