Pattaya club gets 5-yr ban

A pub in Chon Buri's South Pattaya has become the first entertainment venue in the east to be shut down in a crackdown on illegal nightspots on Wednesday night after it allegedly allowed entry to underage clubgoers.

The Face Club in South Pattaya was ordered to close for five years after it defied orders from the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to enforce new restrictions on alcohol sales, Pol Lt Col Sunun Buasingh, inspector of Muang Pattaya provincial police said.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, who also serves as the NCPO's chief, has applied his special powers under Section 44 of the interim charter to tackle alcohol sales near schools and universities and illegal nightspot operations.

Under the new law, any pub or nightclub that allows entry to people aged under 20, or operates after the legal closing time of midnight, will have its licence revoked or will be ordered to shut down for five years.

A combined team of local authorities, military and police launched raids on several nightspots on Wednesday night to investigate complaints lodged by the public through the Chon Buri governor's website.

A raid at the Face Club found that out of more than 120 clubgoers, only six were old enough to enter legally.

The rest did not have ID cards with them, including five patrons who were just 14, Pol Lt Col Sunun said.

The pub's manager and the underage patrons were detained for questioning, police said.
