Thai media reported that the damaged escalator was in a plaza zone at the Wongsawang Town Centre that also houses the Big C supermarket branch.
Photos from social media users show some collapsed stairs and torn metal parts at the base of its handrails. The escalator was then closed. There were no reports of injuries.
Social media users who posted the incident also referred to recent casualties from malfunctioning escalators in China which included a young mother falling to her death through a hole in a mall escalator in Jingzhou and a cleaner who lost his leg after it got stuck in the mechanism of a mall escalator in Shanghai.
