A 21-year-old man and his 16-year-old girlfriend were found dead after they hanged themselves from a tree in Surin’s Tha Tum district on Wednesday morning.

They each had a nylon rope around their neck, attached to an overhead branch of a Lamduan tree near a Puta spirit shrine behind Dong Yen village in tambon Nong Bua, said Pol Lt Churos Bung-ngam, duty officer at Tha Tum police station.

He said the discovery of the bodies was reported to police about 6am on Wednesday

Police and rescue workers sent to the scene reported finding a young man wearing a black T-shirt and cream trousers and a teenage girl in a blue T-shirt and black long pants hanging by their necks from a nylon rope. The man was identified later as Ratchanon Mali-ngam, 21. The name of the 16-year-old girl, a student, was withheld.

Police investigators found out the pair were sweethearts but their relationship was not approved of by their families. This might have been the motive in their decision to end their lives, said Pol Lt Churos.

Police will later question their relatives.
