The Meteorological Department on Saturday warned people living in 9 provinces in the North, Northeast and the South to brace for heavy rain, possible flash floods and runoff as rains intensify.

The monsoon trough currently lies across the lower North and the Northeast and the strong southwest monsoon is prevailing across the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand. As a result, abundant rain is expected in the Northeast, East and South and heavy downpours in some areas, the department said.

It advised people living in risky areas in nine provinces to prepare for possible heavy rain accumulation that might trigger flash floods and forest runoff.

The nine provinces are Nakhon Ratchasima, Ubon Ratchathani, Trat, Ranong, Phangnga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun.

Waves in the Andaman Sea are expected to be 2-3 metres high during this period. All ships should proceed with caution and small boats should stay onshore, the department warned.

Typhoon Soudelor, which has caused damage in Taiwan, will make landfall over Fujian in China today, said the department. It advised people wanting to travel to those areas to follow weather updates. However, the typhoon had no direct impact on Thailand, it added.
