Court sets up units to rush trafficking trials

The Criminal Court will open three new divisions to directly handle human trafficking, corruption and drugs cases on Monday in a bid to speed up trials, says Criminal Court chief judge Athip Chitsamrerng.

The opening ceremony, presided over by Supreme Court president Direk Inkhaninan, will kick off at 9am.

The Criminal Court will also sign agreements, or MoUs, with the Office of the Attorney-General, the Royal Thai Police Office and the Justice and Social Development and Human Security ministries, to enable cooperation between different government departments.

The move is part of state efforts to improve Thailand's human trafficking record after recent criticism by the US Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report.
