Many places that sell alcohol in the vicinity of educational institutes in Muang district of Khon Kaen province were found to be "very near" the campus, and could be in violation of a Prime Minister's Office order.

The order, issued under Section 44 of the interim charter, bans sales of alcohol near educational institutes, without mentioning an exact distance.

A combined force of military, police and administrative officials in Khon Kaen inspected liquor outlets in Muang district early on Monday morning, measuring the distance to nearby universities.

The action was led by Pol Col Jeerawat Kongkraphan, deputy Khon Kaen police chief, Piyin Talapnak, the Muang district chief, and Lt Col Pitakpol Chusri, chief of the military peace-keeping unit in Khon Kaen.

At the Rajamangala University of Technology's Khon Kaen campus, four of the five nearby venues selling alcohol were found to be less than 40 metres from the campus, and the fifth only 17m from it.

At Khon Kaen University, many nearby alcohol outlets were less than 100m from the campus boundary.

The owners were invited to witness the measurement and the PM's Office order was explained to them.

Pol Col Jeerawat said since a proposal by the National Committee for Alcohol Consumption Control to ban the sale of alcoholic beverages within a 300 metre radius of educational institutes was still being examined, the shop owners were only warned that their premises were close to a campus.

Once the ban took effect, they would be required to move, or stop selling alcohol, he said.
