A businessman in Chiang Mai is being hailed for his unique "Bike for Mom" -- taking his elderly mother out to enjoy the pleasure of a visit to a botanic garden.

Anat Jaturat, 40, took his 78-year-old mother Chamnongluck Jaturat to Tweechol Botanic Garden in Doi Saket district of the northern province on Thursday morning.

The elderly woman was not in a private car, but in a wheelchair towed behind her son’s bicycle. She had the twin delights of a trip around the beautiful garden, and seeing her son cycle at the same time.

Mr Anat’s trip through the  garden with his mother impressed both visitors on foot and other cyclists.

He and other members of the family members cycle around the garden as part of their fitness preparations for an important event in Chiang Mai on Aug 16 in honour of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s 83rd birthday.

The "Bike For Mom" event on Sunday will be held at the same time as similar events in other provinces that are expected to draw hundreds of thousands of well-wishers and cycling enthusiasts.

Mr Anat said he cycles every day to prepare for Sunday’s ride. His mother saw him going out to bike at the botanic garden and told him that she wanted to visit the place and see him cycle.

To fulfil his mother’s wish, the businessman said, he decided to attach her wheelchair to his bike with a length of rope and tow her hehind him. This way his mother could view the beautiful scenery of the garden as well as watch him cycle.

‘’When I pedalled my bike around the garden, I noticed how happy my mother looked. My children also cycle to prepare for Sunday's event,’’ he said.

He added he would also take his mother to the ‘’Bike for Mom’’,  as she would be happy to be outside the house.
