A Malaysian woman was killed and two others seriously injured when the car they were travelling in was hit by a refrigerated truck in Songkhla’s Hat Yai district early Wednesday, police said.

The crash happened at Khuan Lang intersection on Phetkasem Road in Khuan Lang municipal area, said Pol Lt Chamlong Khongsawat, a duty officer at Hat Yai police station, and was reported around 4am.

The 10-wheel refrigerated truck, loaded with fish, was travelling from Ranong to Hat Yai when it hit the car, which had Malaysian licence plates, at the intersection. A woman sitting in the front was killed in the crash and two other women seriously hurt, Thai media reported on Wednesday.

Rescue workers retrieved the body of the dead woman from the wreckage of the car. The two injured women were rushed to a nearby hospital.

The three women, all Malaysian nationals, had not yet been identified, said police.

Surapong Khonglao, 37, driver of the truck, told police he went through a yellow traffic light at the intersection and the car suddenly appeared in front of him. He said he was unable to avoid a collision.

Police were investigating.
