Thousands of people turned up for a religious ceremony to consecrate the statues of former great kings of Thailand at Ratchapakdi Park in Hua Hin district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province on Wednesday morning.

The ceremony, chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, was performed by 108 revered monks from across the country.

Thai and foreign tourists and local residents began to converge at Ratchapakdi Park early in the morning and the crowd swelled to an estimated 10,000 by 8.30am, as the giant statues of the seven former great kings stood graciously on their platforms in bright sunshine.

A number of famous actors and singers such as Sorapong Chatree and Dome Pakorn Lum were among the faithful who gathered in the park for the ceremony amid tight security provided by police from the Region 7 Provincial Police Bureau.

The statues of the seven former great kings were transported to the park and then placed on their platforms between July 27 and Aug 9.

Standing in line at the park are the statues of King Ramkhamhaeng of the Sukhothai period; King Naresuan and King Narai of the Ayutthaya period; King Taksin of the Thon Buri period; and King Buddha Yodfa Chulalok, King Mongkut and King Chulalongkorn of the Rattanakosin period.
