Four building workers were badly injured when seven steel beams collapsed at a car showroom under construction in Nakhon Sawan’s Muang district on Thursday.

The accident happened at the site of a car showroom being built on Nakhon Sawan-Phitsanulok Road in tambon Ban Maklua, said Pol Lt Rungniran Wichaporn, a duty officer at Bang Muang police station. It was reported to police around 10am on Thursday.

About 10 workers were on the site and welding steel cross beams to steel pillars when one beam fell down. It started a domino effect as six other attached beams also fell, the construction foreman said.

Some beams fell on top of four workers, three Thais and a Lao national. They suffered broken legs and arms and were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Pipop Suksai, director of Ban Maklua tambon administration organisation’s public works division, led a group of civil engineers to inspect the accident site.

He said Kriangsak Assawarak, managing director of Sap Thawee Engineering Co, had submitted a design plan for construction of a car showroom for multi-purpose vehicles.

However, the design failed to meet requirements and the firm had been told to correct and resubmit it. They firm did not submit a revised plan and went ahead with the construction.

Mr Pipop said the company's executives would face legal action for failing to comply with a local authority building order. He had ordered that construction of the showroom be suspended.

A source said the owner of the showroom went to the scene and promised to cover the medical bills and compensate the injured workers.
