New cables link 2 Phuket islands to power grid

The Provincial Electricity Authority has officially opened two underwater cables from Phuket to Nakha Yai and Koh Maphrao islands under a 112-million-baht project to supply electricity to all parts of the country.

A ceremony inaugurating the two cables was held on Monday in Phuket. It was chaired by PEA governor Sermsakul Klaikaew and attended by Phuket governor Nisit Chansomwong and a number of PEA officials.

Mr Sermsakul said one power transmission cable extends 1,181 metres from Laem Hin on Phuket to Koh Maphrao island. The other runs for 3,040m from the boat pier of Ao Po bay to Nakha Yai island.

The PEA began supplying electricity to Nakha Yai island on May 23 and Koh Maphrao island on July 24 on trial basis before the official opening.

Ramkhamhaeng University was commissioned by the PEA to conduct an environmental impact assessment of the project both before and after the completion of construction.
