Almost 20 dogs were poisoned in a village in Sai Ngam district of Kamphaeng Phet in one night, raising alarm over thefts.

Images of the dead dogs at Mae Yue village in tambon Nong Maikong were posted on Facebook on Thursday and drew strong condemnation from dog lovers.

On his Facebook page, Akkharawit Viriya, 36, a resident of tambon Nong Maikong, vented his frustration over the mass poisoning in his community on Wednesday. He immediately filed a complaint with local police.

Surachai Maliwan, 46, who lost three dogs to the poisoners, said he saw one of his pets carrying a bone and dying in agony in less than a minute, according to Khaosod Online.

He and owners of the ill-fated dogs had alerted their village head about the poisonings.

Security has been tightened, with increased night patrols, in 10 villages in tambon Nong Maikong, said Pol Snr Sgt Maj Decha Lulongyot of the Sai Ngam police station.

Local residents have also been advised to take extra precautions against possible thefts of their valuables and agricultural produce.

A local resident told police that more than 70 of his grafted lemon branches had been cut off and stolen two months ago. Each branch could be sold for 70-80 baht.

He said he believed the poisoners might have wanted to stop the dogs from barking so that they could carry out thefts undetected.
