Man commits suicide by train

A 66-year-old man was killed after being run over by a train in Ratchathewi district early Wednesday in what was believed to be a suicide.

Pol Lt Natdanai Lodklang, a duty officer at Noppawong railway police station, said the incident occurred on Phetchaburi Road happened about 4am.

Pana Chankaen, a security guard at a railway community, said he saw the man, identified later as Manachai Ngamwuthipong, sit on a bench by the train tracks from 2.30am to around 3.45am.

While an express train bound for Bangkok from Sila-at was passing by, the man suddenly walked over to the tracks and laid down, allowing himself to be run over by the oncoming train.

Rescue workers of the Por Teck Tueng Foundation and doctors from Vajira Hospital found near the body a copy of his ID card, a paper with a telephone number for contacting his relatives, a medical bill from Police General Hospital for which he had paid 13,000 baht, and 50 baht cash.

His wife, Prapas Moon-ek, 57, told police that her husband suffered from liver cancer.  He was just released from the hospital on Tuesday.

At about 2am on Wednesday, he told her he would go to see a friend in Lumpini area and left.  She was informed of his death after the incident.
