Pupil-slapping teacher faces new penalty

A senior teacher in Nakhon Ratchasima who smacked a high school student around the head and forced him to remove his trousers in front of other pupils may face additional penalties from the Teachers Council of Thailand, or Kurusapa.

Soeng Sang School deputy director Isoonpiyathorn Juthatham was caught on video slapping the head of a Matthayom 5 student in front of other students on Aug 21.

A panel set up by the Office of the Nakhon Ratchasima Secondary Education Area 31 on Monday ruled to transfer him to a small high school in tambon Chorakhe Hin in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Khon Buri district where he would keep his position as deputy director.

Yesterday it decided to punish him by cutting his salary by 10% for one month. Members of social media and webboards including Pantip.com have slammed the penalty as being too mild.

Chukiet Viset-sena, the office’s director, affirmed the penalty was appropriate and the most under his agency’s authority, adding although it was criticised by online communities.

Mr Chukiet said Kurusapa had requested the findings regarding the case from his agency as it would consider further punishment against Mr Isoonpiyathorn. He had already sent the evidence to the governing body.

He said the penalties imposed by Kurusapa which directs teachers’ conduct ranges from issuing a written warning to suspension or the revoking of the teaching licence.

Mr Isoonpiyathorn’s actions were likely to draw punishment for breaching teacher’s professional ethics and for showing impoliteness to students, he added.
