Suspect of Trat EC chief shooting arrested

TRAT — Police have arrested a man suspected of shooting Trat province's election commission chairman late last month.

Police, following leads from circumstantial evidence and CCTV footage, apprehended Vorapol Horsilp in Chon Buri on Friday.

He was initially charged him with premeditated murder and collaborating to have in possession arms and ammunition.

"The suspect confessed to having been hired to commit the crime but wouldn't tell the mastermind so I can't give more details right now," Pol Maj Gen Waratchai Srirattanavud, chief of Trat provincial police, said.

Mr Vorapol, 44, was brought to Trat ai 11pm on Friday to be detained at the police station there, he added.

Prateep Jongsuebtham, chairman of Trat's Election Commission and ex-deputy Trat governor, was shot in front of his house at 2.20pm on Aug 25. He was seriously injured.

Police have not established the motive of the crime but narrowed it down to politicial and personal reasons. They planned to hold a briefing to give more details on the case at 1pm on Saturday.
