Three dozen starving dogs and cats abandoned and left locked inside a deserted policeman's house in Surat Thani province for a month have been rescued.

Police, livestock officials, veterinarians and volunteers were called to the house at Noen Khao Eua Arthorn housing estate in tambon Wat Pradu in Muang district on Tuesday evening by anxious neighbours.

The team found the house firmly locked up with the sound barking dogs coming from inside, along with a foul smell.

Officials had tried unsuccessfully to contact the house owner, Pol Snr Sgt Maj Satta Noonoi, and so used a bolt cutter to open the front gate.

A total of 36 animals, 25 adult dogs, two puppies and nine cats, were found inside the premises, where the floors were covered with animal faeces. The smell of dirty, starving animals permeated the building.

The animals had no food or water and had been locked in the house since Pol Snr Sgt Maj Satta was transferred from Surat Thani to Phuket in early August.

The rescuers immediately gave water and food to the animals, before taking them to a temporary shelter.

Pol Col Wisut Phupansri, chief of Surat Thani Muang district police, said the national housing authority’s Surat Thani office and the community leader had filed complaints of cruelty to animals against Pol Snr Sgt Maj Satta.
