ANG THONG — A man and his daughter died after their car was struck by a large motorcycle while attempting a U-turn on a highway in Wiset Chai Chan district on Wednesday morning. The bike rider was seriously injured.

Pol Lt Ratchakrich Kaokan, a duty officer at Wiset Chai Chan police station, said the accident occurred on Pho Phraya-Tharng Rua Road at Moo 5 village of Yee Lon sub-district.

Sataporn Poocharoen, 47, was driving an old Toyota Corona with his daughter Dussadee, 23, in the passenger seat next to him.

A witness, Nattawut Pongpisut, told police the Corona suddenly moved from the left lane to the right to make a U-turn, after the driver apparently noticed a police checkpoint near an intersection ahead of him, Pol Lt Ratchakrich said.

Mr Nattawut told police it seemed that Sataporn did not look in his rear-view mirror.

Kriengsak Hoonkittivej, 48, was travelling behind the Corona on a BMW R1200 and tried to avoid it. His bike rammed into the side of the car. The impact was so powerful it flipped the sedan and Mr Kriengsak was thrown some distance down the road.

All three people involved in the collision were seriously injured, and both the car and the motorcycle  suffered major damage.

Sataporn and his daughter, who was soon to graduate with a degree in nursing, were later pronounced dead at Ang Thong hospital. Mr Kriengsak had a broken arm and leg and his family transferred him from Ang Thong Hospital to a hospital in Bangkok for further treatment.

Pol Lt Ratchakrich said Sataporn may have wanted to avoid the police checkpoint, possibly because his driving licence or vehicle documents were not in order.

He said more witnesses would be questioned before police decided what action to take.
