One Thai killed, 2 missing in Mecca

The Office of Hajj Affairs of Thailand says a Thai woman was killed and two other Thai pilgrims are missing in a crane collapse at Mecca’s Grand Mosque on Friday night, in addition to two reported injured in earlier statements.

Earlier statements by the office had said only two Thai Muslim pilgrims were injured in the incident.

The third statement, issued on Friday, stated officials from the Office of the Hajj Affairs of Thailand and the Thai Consulate in Jeddah conducted futher checks of information on casualties from the incident at hospitals in Mecca and found that one Thai pilgrim was killed and two are still missing.

The woman was identified as Wanida Sadi, 48, of house No 575/159, Soi Phetkasem in Lak Song sub-district of Bang Khae district, Bangkok. She went on the Hajj pilgrimage with SW Pernika Pattani Limited Partnership.

The Office of Hajj Affairs of Thailand in Mecca will contact her relatives and the Saudi authorities for burial details and the issuing of a death certificate, the statement said.

The office will continue to look for the other two who are still missing.

As for the two Thai men who were injured, they were provided with medical treatment at a Thai hoc medical centre in Mecca.

Sama-ae Sasu, from Yala, suffered injuries to his left hand, right knee and face.

Maeyoh Daemo, from Pattani, had a cut over an eyebrow, requring nine stitches, and a broken tooth.

The statement said one of them had been discharged, but did not identify him.

A towering construction crane toppled over aat about 10pm on Friday (2am Saturday, Thailand time) during a violent rainstorm in Mecca, Islam’s holiest site, crashing onto large crowds gathered at the Grand Mosque, known as the Masjid al-Haram.

Initial reports said at least 107 people were killed and 218 others injured.
