Four provinces are still wrangling with flooding from tropical depression Vamco while conditions have improved in 20 other areas, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said Thursday.

Department chief Chatchai Promlert said flooding is still present in Sa Kaeo, Surat Thani, Prachin Buri and Suphan Buri following that storm that hit Thailand Sept 13.

The 20 provinces where flooding has eased are Rayong, Chon Buri, Phangnga, Chumphon, Trat, Saraburi, Ranong, Satun, Tak, Chanthaburi, Surin, Si Sa Ket, Trang, Chachoengsao, Nakhon Nayok, Krabi, Phatthalung, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Phetchaburi.

In total, 950 villages in 206 tambons and 70 districts were affected by the weather system, he said.

The department and other agencies, with help from the military, has pooled resources to drain water from flooded areas and provided assistance to affected residents.

Officials have been deployed to assess the damage in order to lay down a plan for rehabilitation.

As for Sa Kaeo, Prachin Buri, Surat Thani and Suphan Buri where 54 villages in seven districts are still flooded, the water is receding.  If there is no more rain, the situation there is expected to return to normal within a few days, Mr Chatchai said.
