The State Railway of Thailand has permanently cancelled 14 train services found to have overlapping routes and too few passengers, effective immediately.

SRT governor Wuthichart Kalyanamitra said Thursday the cancelled services involve two rapid trains, 10 Bangkok commuter trains and two rural commuter trains operating to and from Bangkok, on the northern, eastern and southern lines.

He said rush-hour rail traffic congestion had been causing delays on some routes. The changes would provide faster services and reduce operating costs. The shutdown services had been taken up by other trains with similar travel schedules.

The 14 dissolved services are:

Northern Line

Bangkok commuter trains No. 305/306 (Bangkok-Ayutthaya-Bangkok)

Bangkok commuter trains No. 315/316 (Bangkok-Lop Buri-Bangkok)

Bangkok commuter trains No. 343/344 (Bangkok-Kaeng Khoi-Bangkok)

Eastern Line

Bangkok commuter trains No. 381 (Bangkok-Chachoengsao)

Bangkok commuter trains No. 385/386 (Bangkok-Chachoengsao-Bangkok)

Bangkok commuter trains No. 394 (Chachoengsao-Bangkok)

Southern Line

Rapid train No.177/178 (Thon Buri-Lang Suan-Thon Buri)

Rural commuter train No. 457/458 (Nakhon Si Thammarat- Phatthalung-Nakhon Si Thammarat)

Mr Wuthichart advised commuters to check the new train timetables at railway stations, or call the SRT's hotline number 1690 for information.
