MAE HONG SON - Three workers were killed when a deep ditch they were working in collapsed on top of them in Mae Sariang district on Monday morning, police said.

Pol Lt Norapat Thongdee said the collapse  occurred about 9am while the three workers were connecting water pipes in a ditch about 2 metres deep behind the office of Chuen Chu Phrai Constitution Co on Mae Saring - Mae Hong Son road.

The fallen earthworks buried the three workers.

Other workers and rescuers tried frantically to help them out with tools and an excavator, but were too late.

They managed to retrieve only the dead bodies of Yodoi Yokpiromrassamee, 34, Yole (surname unknown), 31, and Uthai Piyawong, 48.
