German dies on Pattaya beach

A 48-year-old German man was found dead on Pattaya beach on Saturday morning.

The man's body was found face-down on the beach opposite Pattaya Soi 6 in tambon Nong Phreu, said Pol Col Nattawat Ploenchit, a duty officer at the Pattaya police station, who was alerted around 8.30am on Saturday.

An empty bottle of foreign whiskey and another unopened bottle of the same brand were found near the body. There were no signs of a struggle and the man's belongings were untouched.

Police believed the German national had died at least one or two hours before his body was found.

Sa-ngob Kaewsathorn, 48, a scavenger, told police that he had seen the man drinking alone on the beach around 12.30am. When he passed the area again in the morning, he noticed the man was still there but his face was in the sand. After determining that the man was dead, Mr Sa-ngob called the police.

Police believed the man might have died of sudden heart attack after drinking a lot of alcohol. His body will be sent to Police General Hospital in Bangkok for a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death. Officers are also informing the German embassy.
