Chief's firing irks Thai PBS staff

Thai PBS staff have demanded an explanation from the board over the decision to sack the station's director-general last week.

Workers yesterday handed a letter to the board chairman Narong Phetprasert, calling for an explanation over the firing of Somchai Suwanban last week, which they say has shaken the staff's confidence.

Mr Narong said the decision to terminate Mr Somchai's employment contract with the station was nothing personal.

The nine-member board later yesterday issued a statement saying Mr Somchai -- who was hired to head Thai PBS in 2012 -- had failed his performance evaluation. Last week the board of governors also alleged he had approved four 50-million-baht projects without its consent.

The board has set up a fact-finding panel to look into the alleged irregularities in one of the projects concerning Thai PBS's auctioning of digital TV licences.

The board evaluated Mr Somchai on Oct 2, after three years of work with the public TV station. His performance was analysed based on strategic management, problem-solving skills, communication, initiative and work transparency.

The board unanimously decided Mr Somchai had under-performed.

Meanwhile, Mr Somchai has insisted he followed the proper procedures to implement all projects he approved and said he had even presented a master plan to the board and kept it regularly updated on the progress of the projects.

However, Mr Narong said the board has already started the recruitment process for Mr Somchai's replacement and is now selecting candidates.
