A fire on the ground floor of the Golden Residence Hotel, which has been closed for renovation, in Chiang Mai town early on Tuesday caused damage worth about 500,000 baht.

Mae Ping police and three fire engines from Chiang Mai Municipality rushed to the hotel on Chiang Mai -Lamphun road in tambon Wat Ket after being informed of the fire about 12.30am.

The fire started in a dining room on the ground floor being used to store bedding and furniture during renovation of the four-storey hotel.

The fire was put out in about 30 minutes after damaging a motorcycle and about 60 sets of bedding and some furniture. The damage was estimated at 500,000 baht.

Kittiya On-im, 18, a housekeeper, said the hotel closed for renovations about one month ago after it was taken over by a new owner.

Police were investigating.
