A truck driver was killed and five other people injured when his vehicle was hit by a train at a level crossing without a barrier in Nakhon Ratchasima province late on Wednesday night.

The accident happened on Mitraparp 22 Road in Nai Muang sub-district of Muang district in the northeastern province about 11.10pm. It halted train services on the line for hours.

The six-wheeled refrigerator truck registered in Nonthaburi province was carrying meatballs. It crossed the track right in front of a rapid train from Ubon Ratchathani province heading for Bangkok.

The locomotive barrelled at speed into the white Hino truck owned by Advance Food Marketing Co and ran off the track. Truck driver Weenas Inthidej was killed. Three truck passengers and two train passengers were injured.

The track was closed while railway workers took about four hours moving the locomotive and carriages of train number 142 back to Nakhon Ratchasima station. Services resumed on Thursday morning.
