Six killed in Lamphun pickup accident

A pickup truck overturned and slid upside down into a water-filled roadside ditch in Muang district of Lamphun province early Monday, killing all six people in it, police said.

Pol Maj Udon Yana, duty officer at Muang Ji police station in Lamphun's Muang district, said highway police and rescuers rushed to the Doi Ti intersection on Chiang Mai - Lampang superhighway when thea ccident was reported.

They found a four-dour pickup truck had overturned and sunk in two-metre deep water in a roadside ditch.  The vehicle was lying upside down and was nearly completely submerged.

A rescue vehicle was called out from Lamphun to lift the pick-up truck from the water, but the rescuers found out it was too late.

All six men inside were found dead.  They were identified as Nathapong Wongnetnapa, 24, Chakkrit Niamtha, 24, Jessada Puansing, 23, Thirapat Kanthiya, 23, Nathapong Wisapa, 22, and Sanguan Puansing, 33, the driver.  All were from Pa Sang district of Lamphun.

It was initially believed the pickup truck overturned on the road before sliding into the ditch full of water.

Police were investigating the cause of the accident.
