Foreigner found hanged in Chiang Mai

The body of a foreign man, believed to be an Asian national, was found hanged with his hands tied in a guesthouse under construction in Muang district of Chiang Mai on Saturday.

The man, in his 30s, was found dead on the second floor of the two-storey Thai-style guesthouse under construction in tambon Phra Singh, said Pol Maj Watcharapol Yomkerd, a duty officer at Muang police station.

Wearing a grey T-shirt, capri pants and a blue cap, the man was hanging by a scarf around his neck from a beam, said police. His hands were bound with a black leather strip. A chair was found fallen on the floor, Thairath Online reported.

There were no traces of a struggle inside the house, said Pol Maj Watcharapol. There were no identification documents on his body. Doctors believe he was not a Thai, saying his face looked Japanese, South Korean or Chinese.

The guesthouse was still being built and nobody was guarding the site at night. A housewife at a nearby guesthouse found the body this morning and alerted police.

Police Maj Watchara said the body would be sent to Maharaj Nakhon Chiang Mai Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of the death. Police have yet to determine whether the man hanged himself or someone else killed him and later hanged his body to conceal the crime.
