World's tallest man dies in Surin

A man who once stood 269 centimetres tall and was thought to be the world's tallest person has died at his home in Surin province at the age of 26.

His mother, Mrs Woen, said her son Pornchai Saosri died at 10.05am on Monday at their house in Ban Takaeo village in Prasat district.

Pornchai, who had suffered from many illnesses related to his unusual growth and hypertension had been treated in Prasat Hospital for eight days before being released recently and taken back home.

He was bedridden and being cared for by his father Saran, 60, Mrs Woen, 56, and their 15-year-old granddaughter.

Mrs Woen said she found her son dead this morning when she returned from washing dishes to take care of him as usual.

No plans had yet been made for his funeral, she said.

Mr Woen said after Pornchai's illness and his unusual growth was reported by the media, people from across the country had sent money to a bank account opened for donations and she had received a total of 110,000 baht.

She said she spent part of the money to redeem her house, which she had mortgated for money to pay for Pornchai's medical care and other necessities before his death.

Mrs Woen said she had about 50,000 baht left in the bank account and it would be used for Pornchai's funeral.
