The Bangkok Metropolitan Administrations has banned the sale of fireworks and sky lanterns for the Loy Krathong festival on Nov 25.

BMA's deputy spokesperson Bensai Keeyapat said playing with fireworks and releasing khom loy lanters would be banned across the city to mitigate fire dangers as well as prevent aviation accidents.

The decision was made at a BMA meeting chaired by Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra on Monday. City hall and other agencies will set up joint administrative centres to oversee security procedures and provide convenience for revellers.

Mrs Bensai said patrol, rescue and medical boats would travel along the Chao Phraya River and ready to respond to unexpected incidents. Checkpoints will also be erected on roads to arrest drivers exceeding speed and alcohol limits.

Mrs Bensai said there would be six major Loy Krathong venues this year in the city after Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem beside Government House was designated as the new festival area.

The other five locations are the Rama VIII Bridge, Rama IX Bridge, Santi Chaiprakarn Park, Lumpini Park and Nawamin Pirom Park.
