Two new stations are to be added to Bangkok Mass Transit System's skytrain service to ease crowding at existing stations, with the first planned for Sathorn Road.

Deputy Bangkok governor Amorn Kitchawengkul said the new stations had been included in the original plan since the beginning of the construction of the 23.5-kilometre elevated mass transit route.

The first additional station will be Sueksa Wittaya, between Chong Nonsi and Surasak stations. It will be on Sathorn Road near Sathorn Soi 12. The estimated cost is 450 million baht, with construction to begin in 2016.

The second station will be Sena Ruam, between Ari and Saphan Khwai. It will be built when the first one is completed.

Mr Amorn said the extra stations were needed because of the change in the demography of the area, with a rapidly rising population and more commuters. The current stations were overcrowded and the new ones would be more convenient for many people.

The new stations were included in the original concession, so the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration would not have to provide extra funding.

Mr Amorn said BTS fares would remain the same as the rate already took into account the two planned new stations.
