FM: No Thais hurt in Paris attacks

No Thai people were hurt in the terror attacks in Paris on Friday night when at least 127 people died, Foreign Ministry spokesman Sek Wannamethee said in a statement on Sunday.

Mr Sek, director-general of the Information Department, said the government had assigned the Foreign Affairs Ministry and Thai embassy in Paris to step up security measures and keep the Thai community and Thai students in contact.

So far no Thai people or tourists had sought assistance from the embassy, he said.

The Thai embassy had asked the Thai people residing in France to contact their relatives back home to ease their worries and advised them to avoid certain spots which might put them at risk.

Since the state of emergency had been declared, Paris was rather quiet now but the people could still lead a normal life.

Those who want to travel to France can still do so as no airports have been closed. However, cross-border travellers may see some inconveniences as they may be subject to strict security screening, Mr Sek said. Thai Airways International is still operating flights to France as usual.

Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said she was keeping in close contact with the Foreign Affairs Ministry for information on the latest situation in France.

Mrs Kobkarn said Thai tourists visiting France were either travelling by themselves or are with tour groups.

Last year, a total of 167,148 Thais visited France. During the first half of this year, 103,073 Thai tourists had visited.

Conversely, 635,073 French tourists visited Thailand last year. As of October this year, the number of French tourists to land was 589,549, she said.
