Firms win contracts for dual-track route

Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction Plc and Right Tunnelling Co won electronic auctions held yesterday to find contractors to build the State Railway of Thailand's (SRT) dual-track rail route from Chachoengsao to Saraburi.

Kamol Tangkijjaroen, deputy governor of the SRT, said the 106km-long rail project is broken into two contracts and the two companies won each of them.

The first contract deals with the construction of the Chachoengsao-Khlong 19-Kaeng Khoi section and the Bua Yai-Kaeng Khoi section of the dual-track rail route along with three associated bypasses, he said.

The second contract deals with the construction of the Wihan Daeng-Bua Yai section of the dual-track rail route, plus a tunnel, he said.

Sino-Thai beat out more than five other contenders taking part in the auction for the first contract in which the reserve price was set at 9.9 billion baht, said a source, adding Sino-Thai offered the lowest price of 9.8 billion baht, or 1% lower than the reserve price.

Right Tunnelling, meanwhile, beat out three other bidders, offering the lowest price of 407 million baht, 32% lower than the reserve price set at 598.6 million baht, said the source.

Meanwhile, the Transport Ministry yesterday approved a proposal to construct a light rail transit system in Phuket to help ease traffic congestion, Chaiwat Thongkhamkhoon, deputy director of the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning said. The agreement was reached at a meeting chaired by Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith.

The government is expected to need 23.4 billion baht to invest in this project with a private partner. Potential partners that have expressed an interest are from China, South Korea and Europe.
