A 76-year-old British man died after being hit by a motorcycle as he was crossing a street on Koh Samui in Surat Thani province late on Thursday night.

The accident occurred on Ban Bangrak Road  in front of the Samui Mermaid Hotel in Koh Samui district  around midnight, Khaosod Online reported on Friday morning.

Rescue workers found the elderly British man lying unconscious on the road. The Thai rider of the motorbike, identified as Akkhapol Ekchat, 31, was also injured. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital where the hotelier was later pronounced dead.

According to Khaosod Online, the foreigner regularly met up with his British friends every Thursday night at a restaurant near the accident scene.

After drinking a glass of wine, he had left and was crossing the road to his car when the speeding motorcycle hit him.
