BECL set to scrutinise Sri Ratch expressway project

A proposed ramp to link the Sri Ratch expressway to the 2nd-stage expressway at Chatuchak will be scrutinised by the Bangkok Express Public Company Ltd (BECL).

The Expressway Authority of Thailand (Exat) assigned the task to BECL.

EXAT acting governor Narong Kieddej said the BECL is conducting a study on the design of the ramp which will span 300 metres to link the two expressways.

The company is also calculating the funds required for the ramp's construction, Mr Narong said.

The ramp will be convenient for commuters who use the expressway leading to Chaeng Watthana Road, he said.

The construction of the expressway linking Sri Ratch to the Outer Ring Road is 80% complete and expected to be launched next August, he said.

Mr Narong also provided an update on the progress of other projects overseen by his agency that are expected to help tackle traffic congestion problems.

Bidding for the construction of an expressway linking Rama 3-Dao Kanong-Kanchanapisek road (the Western Outer Ring), spanning 17km, is expected to open late next year, he said.

He said the Office of the National Environmental Board is studying a construction report which his organisation had submitted. Funds for land expropriation for residents who stand to be affected by the project will be increased from the previous figure of about 2 billion baht, Mr Narong said. He said a budget of 25 billion baht had been allocated for the project.

Meanwhile, the land traffic management committee had asked the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning to carry out a feasibility study for construction of the 3rd-stage expressway linking the north to a corridor in the east, spanning 42.3km, Mr Narong said.

The committee had also asked the agency to study the possibility of constructing an electric rail route in the area, he said, adding some sections of the 3rd-stage expressway are expected to link to the 2nd-stage expressway, providing easy access for commuters to travel to the Muang Thong Thani area.

Meanwhile, Land Transport Department director-general Sanit Phromwong said amendments to the Land Transport Act 1979 and the Automobile Act 1979 which his department had proposed are being reviewed by the Council of State.

The department wants to amend laws to cancel the use of red licence plates for new cars and issue a permanent number plate for a vehicle soon after its release from the showroom.

It is hoped the plans will be finalised within two years.
