Chiang Mai cleans market after feasting rats caught on video

Chiang Mai city officials have reviewed regulations governing cleanliness of fresh markets after a viral video clip showed rats eating pork left unattended at a butcher shop in Muang Mai Market.

Facebook user "Adam Ppor" posted the video on Thursday saying he had intended to buy pork from the market in Muang district, but nixed that idea after seeing about 20 vermin munching on stacks of pork left uncovered on a table.

Natthachudej Wiriyadiloktham, deputy mayor of Chiang Mai municipality, on Monday met with market vendors, provincial livestock and health officers, and city inspectors to discuss short- and long-term improvements.

After the meeting, Mr Natthachudej said municipal officials used chlorine to clean the market grounds and planned how to get rid of all the rodents.

Mr Natthachudej said all sides agreed to treat the matter urgently and would move to check other markets to ensure good hygeine.

Officails will meet with market operators and vendors again to introduce new measures to regulate product safety.

Mr Natthachudej said any vendor found not cooperating with the new and more stringent food safety regulations would not be allowed to continue their business at the market. Authorities would assess all the markets every two weeks.
