Govt revokes licence of fatal bus crash driver

The Department of Land Transport (DLT) yesterday revoked the driving licence of a bus driver who plunged off the road in Chiang Mai, leaving 14 dead and 12 injured on Sunday.

DLT director-general Sanit Promwong yesterday ordered the Chiang Mai Provincial Land Transport Office to rescind the licence of the driver, Somporn Bualuang, 58.

Mr Somporn, who is now in police custody, has been accused of reckless driving causing death and injuries, said Mr Sanit.

The tour company, Weeraphan Tour & Travel, has also had its operating licence revoked.

Mr Sanit said the firm failed to instruct the driver to stay within speed limits, violating a ministerial regulation on transport safety.

The crash occurred on the Chiang Mai-Chiang Rai Highway in Doi Saket district on Dec 20.

The driver hit a pickup truck in the Mae Khajan area of Chiang Rai and tried to speed away. The pickup driver gave chase, causing the bus driver to accelerate and lose control of the vehicle.
