Capital's air quality 'best in world'

Bangkok is ranked the world's best big city for clean air, a deputy Bangkok governor says.

Citing the Airport Parking and Hotels website, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) deputy governor Chumpol Sampaopol said the website ranked Bangkok the world's best big city in terms air quality for 2015.

The website study compared 28 big cities and their Air Quality Index (AQI) in November this year, based on temperatures and air pollutants that have negative impacts on health and the environment.

A total of 28 big cities including New York, San Francisco, Paris, Venice, Mumbai and Kuala Lampur were surveyed for air quality.

The Airport Parking and Hotels website gave Bangkok the AQI of 18 which is considered "good", said Mr Chumpol.

According to the website, a score between 0-50 is classified as good air quality and temperature, 51-100 is moderate, 101-200 is unhealthy, 201-300 is very unhealthy, 301-500 is hazardous, and more than 500 signals an emergency.

The worst on the list is Beijing with a score of 328, followed by Dubai with 222 and Mumbai with 155. While Kuala Lumpur scored 120, Tokyo got 59, and Los Angeles 55.

Air quality monitoring results showed the air in the city measured between January and November is cleaner than during the same period last year, Mr Chumpol said.

The level of particulate matter with a size of less than 10 micrometres, or PM10, in the city this year is 3.14 microgrammes per cubic metre (μg/cu m³) of air measured compared to 4.94 last year, he added. The safety standard is limited to 120 μg/cu m³.

Mr Chumpol said the BMA has launched a campaign to reduce air pollution in the city as it is aware of the health risks posed by air pollutants.
