Road rage DJ faces additional charge, hands in driving licence

The former DJ who sparked online outrage on Friday for deliberately ramming his pickup truck backwards into a car was hit with an additional charge Sunday of causing harm.

Footage of the crash posted on social media showed Pattarasak Thiemprasert, 35, reversing his black Toyota Hilux twice into a stationary red Yaris on Mitmaitree Road in Bangkok's Din Daeng district. He was then filmed claiming he was in fact the victim of the attack.

Mr Pattarasak, also known as DJ Keng, returned to Din Daeng police station Sunday morning to give additional details, while the Yaris driver, Kavinkan Srireucha, 32, turned up in the afternoon.

Both men were then taken to a press conference where police aired CCTV footage of the crash scene.

Pol Maj Gen Wichanwat Borirakkun, commander of the Metropolitan Police Bureau's Division 1, said both men drove along the inbound lanes of Vibhavadi Rangsit Road and then turned left to Mitmaitree Road, where the incident occurred.

The Yaris sped up and veered into an oncoming lane to overtake the pickup, whose driver refused to yield the position, the officer said. As the traffic came to stop, both vehicles were seen sitting next to each other for several minutes.

When the vehicles started to move on, the pickup did not give way for the Yaris to overtake it, so the car had to get back into the lane behind the pickup.

Both vehicles then stopped, and Mr Kavinkan was seen getting out of his car and walking towards the pickup.

No footage was seen for the scene when the Yaris driver was said to have knocked on the pickup's window.

Mr Kavinkan later got back to his vehicle, at which point the pickup moved forward slightly before twice reversing into the Yaris.

Pol Maj Gen Wichanwat said Mr Kavinkan will be charged with overtaking in a prohibited area and faces a 1,000 baht fine.

Police, meanwhile, brought a charge of causing harm to others against Mr Pattarasak. The offence carries a punishment of up to one month in jail and/or a fine of up to 10,000 baht.

Police decided not to level an attempted murder charge against Mr Pattarasak since Toyota technicians concluded the crash was unlikely to pose any risk to the Yaris driver's life, Pol Maj Gen Wichanwat said.

The force of the crash was not intense enough to deploy the vehicle's air bag.

A charge of damaging property had not been filed, since Mr Kavinkan had agreed not to lodge a complaint, the officer said.

Police earlier decided to press a charge of careless driving against him.

The offence carries a punishment of up to three months in jail and/or a 2,000-10,000 baht fine.

Pol Maj Gen Wichanwat said the incident occurred because neither driver wanted to give way. He called on motorists to be patient and generous when driving.

Mr Pattarasak said he will try to remain calm when driving in the future.

"I will improve myself when driving. I want to ask the public to give me an opportunity to be able to stand in society," Mr Pattarasak said.

"Please give me a chance to redeem myself."

Mr Pattarasak handed in his driving licence Sunday, and it will be seized for 60 days.

Flashback: It was a different atmosphere on Saturday, when "DJ Keng" reversed his pickup into the red Yaris of Mr Kavinkan - and then brandished a tyre iron. After he was shown proof he lied, DJ Keng broke down (inset). (Facebook screen grab from bodyboy.sawangarom video)

Mr Kavinkan denied hitting the pickup truck first, or that he raised his middle finger at Mr Pattarasak.

He said he will not file a police complaint as he can reclaim the costs of the damage from his insurance. He said he wants the case to end and to return to his normal life. Both men later shook hands.
