American falls to death at Patong hotel

PHUKET — A 41-year-old American man has fallen to his death from the 17th floor of a hotel on Patong beach in this resort province.

The man, whose name was being withheld pending notification of relatives, fell from a hotel on Rat-Uthit 200 Pee Road in tambon Patong of Kathu district, said Pol Lt Col Weerapong Rakkhitor, a duty officer at Kathu police station, who was alerted by the hotel staff at 4.35am on Saturday.

Police and rescue workers rushed to the scene and found the body of the American national in cream-coloured shorts, lying face-up outside the ground floor of the hotel. The shirtless man suffered broken ribs with internal injuries.

Pol Lt Col Weerapong said the tourist had been staying in a room on the 17th floor. There were no signs of a struggle inside the room. Many cigarette butts were found on the balcony.

A police investigation showed that the man had checked into the hotel alone several days ago. Police were investigating the cause of death.
