Drinking water has become a hot commodity for border trade in Sa Kaeo province as water shortages spread across the region.
Thai Rath Online reported on Saturday small vendors from Cambodia have bought around 50,000 litres of drinking water a day from Thailand to be sold in the neighbouring country through the Aranyaprathet pass.
Several pull carts laden with 10-litre and regular-sized bottles were seen moving to Cambodia through Poi Pet.
The heavy traffic prompted authorities to be on high alert for fear illegal stuff will be smuggled out.
Pol Lt Col Benjapol Rodsawat, deputy immigration police chief of Sa Kaeo, said his Cambodian counterparts told him water shortages in Cambodia had prompted people to hoard drinking water from Thailand as people believe it is clean and safe.
