Plane with 2 Canadians forced to land near Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai -- A small plane with two Canadians on board made an emergency landing in a cassava plantation in Phrao district on Sunday morning after developing engine trouble, media reported.

Pol Maj Gen Warub Lenkham, the duty office at Long Khot police station, said a team was dispatched to the cassava plantation after the accident was reported at 10.30am.

Gary McNair, 55, the pilot, and his Canadian friend Martin Clarke, 56, were at the scene when the police arrived. Neither of them was hurt.

They had been flying the RV8, two-seat, single-engine aircraft from a small airstrip that crosses Chiang Mai's San Khamphaeng district and Lamphun's Ban Thi district. They left at 9.10am on the sight-seeing trip over San Sai and Phrao districts after receiving permission from the Chiang Mai Aviation Control Centre.

At 9.55am the pilot asked for permission to make an emergency land at the cassava plantation, which is about 20 nautical miles northeast of Chiang Mai Airport, after the plane developed engine trouble.
