Two passengers were killed and 10 others injured when a Mukdahan-bound bus from Nakhon Phanom failed to negotiate a curve on a highway during the rain on Sunday.

The incident occurred on Highway No.212 in That Phanom district of Nakhon Phanom when a bus carrying 12 passengers veered off a winding, slippery road, hit a tree and overturned.

Two passengers identified as Taweesak Srisong, 38, and Prajit Saohong, 45, were thrown out of the bus and died at the scene.

The other injured passengers, two of whom were seriously hurt, were rescued from the wrecked bus and sent to Somdej Phra Yupparat That Phanom Hospital.

The bus was operated by Ubon Ratchathani-based Sahamit Ubon Co. Driver Niran Falamee, 51, who escaped unscathed, told police he was driving at 90 km/h when he lost control of the bus. He claimed he was not driving fast as the vehicle had a speed control system.

Yodpet Khamsangsri, deputy director of Nakhon Phanom Highway District, said authorities had warned motorists to take extra caution while travelling on a section of the highway No.212 linking That Phanom and Mukdahan province. He said car accidents occurred regularly on the section because the road was narrow and had no shoulders, besides busy traffic.
