The National Press Council (NPC) is setting up a working group to study ways to improve ethical and professional standards in the media.

Despite insisting the press keeps the power to regulate itself, NPC president Chavarong Limpattamapanee said the working group, comprising nine members from central and local media outlets, will be set up soon.

The group will establish guidelines to help journalists improve ethics and professional standards, he said.

The guidelines are expected to be revealed by March. Mr Chavarong was speaking at an NPC meeting held on Sunday in Suphan Buri province to discuss ways of upholding ethical and professional standards in the media.

The move comes after unruly photojournalists caused chaotic scenes when the late actor Tridsadee "Por" Sahawong's body was removed from Ramathibodi Hospital on Jan 18.

The meeting was also attended by representatives from press outlets including former NPC president Bunyat Tassaneeyavej and the administrative committee of Thai Journalists Association.

Mr Chavarong said the meeting agreed on the need for journalists to regulate themselves but that there was no need to impose strict rules.

The meeting also agreed to improve the quality of reporting to restore public confidence, he added. Improvements will be made to ethical and professional practices, according to Mr Chavarong.

The NPC will also explore the possibility of setting up an ethical committee to monitor media work and punish journalists who violate ethical practices, he added.
