Frozen cow and buffalo meat illegally imported from India and Nicaragua has been seized in a crackdown in Sakhon Nakhon, police said yesterday.

Following an earlier blitz on illegally imported meat in Nonthaburi, a combined team of police and local livestock authorities extended their investigation to Sakon Nakhon and raided a P-Mart super store in this province.

Pol Maj Gen Chaiyati Saithin, chief of Sakhon Nakhon police, said they seized at least 1 tonne of frozen cow and buffalo meat which the packaging identifies as having come from India and Nicaragua.

Vet Wisut Uea-kingpech, a specialist with Sakon Nakhon’s livestock development office, said the seized meat was imported without approval from livestock authorities. The importer could face up to two years in jail and a maximum fine of 200,000 baht, he said.
